German Chancellor Angela Merkel breaks pelvis in skiing accident

Angela Merkel has fractured her pelvis in a cross-country skiing accident, forcing her to cancel some foreign visits and official appointments.

The German Chancellor fell while skiing over the Christmas period. What she thought at first was just heavy bruising turned out to be a partial fracture.

“She will of course remain working as Chancellor and she is both capable of working and capable of communicating fully. I have already said she will concentrate on a few appointments at the Chancellery and in Berlin. She will, for example chair the first meeting of the New Year of the German Cabinet this week.

‘So in the meantime you will only see her occasionally. But appointments outside Berlin and some public meetings in Berlin will be cancelled because the doctors have told her to rest a lot,” explained Steffan Seibert. German government spokesman.

Merkel was seen on crutches three years ago when she appeared in public after an operation on her knee.

The 59-year-old chancellor has said she prefers cross-country to downhill skiing. Last week she was among those who sent good wishes to her compatriot Michael Schumacher who is in a medically induced coma following an accident on the slopes.
