Japanese whalers accused of breaches

Campaign group Sea Shepherd says this video proves its allegations that Japanese whalers are killing protected species inside an internationally-recognised sanctuary.

It says the bodies seen on the deck of the Nisshin Maru factory ship are Minke whales.

The group's Australian chairman is urging the Australian government to honour an election pledge to monitor the Japanese fleet's activities.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) BOB BROWN, CHAIRMAN OF SEA SHEPHERD AUSTRALIA, SAYING:

"Japan upholds this lie that it's scientific research. Have a look at the footage from this slaughter of the last 24 hours. There's nothing scientific about this. It's butchery of these whales."

Australia and New Zealand last year challenged the the legality of Japan's whale hunt in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

The International Court of Justice in the Hague has yet to give its ruling.
