'Hobbit' trumps ratings-obsessed 'Anchorman' at box office

"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" took the box office for a second weekend in a row, with its dwarves and hobbits bringing in $31.5 million over the weekend.

The 3D "Hobbit" sequel stars Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins. He and a band of dwarves continue their adventure that leads to a clash with a fire-breathing dragon named Smaug.

Meanwhile, the ratings-obsessed, self-infatuated 'Anchorman' himself, played by Will Farrell, failed to beat the box office primetime.

Despite its months-long advertising campaign, "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" rang up a five-day total of $40 million since its debut on Wednesday.

The Boston Globe says, "See it with a crowd, laugh yourself silly, and feel slightly ashamed in the morning."

Farrell plays San Diego's legendary news anchor Ron Burgundy who goes to New York City to join the city's first 24-hour news network.
