Mass opposition rally in Thai capital Bangkok

The Thai opposition has held a fresh mass rally in Bangkok – as its campaign to bring down the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra continues. Tens of thousands of people have taken part.

Shinawatra dissolved the lower house of Parliament earlier this month to try to end the crisis – and called for a snap election to be held on February 2. But that has not quelled the protests.

Thailand’s main opposition party says it will boycott the election, arguing that the vote should not be held if Shinawatra stays on as caretaker prime minister.

Many protesters believe the political system is so corrupt that it should be reformed ahead of any election. They believe the leader’s brother, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, continues to have influence despite being in exile.
