Snow storms blanket Syria

Heavy snow has been falling on the Syrian capital, Damascus, since Thursday and has blanketed the city’s streets.

Winter storm “Alexa” is responsible for the freezing temperatures across Syria and neighbouring countries.

Despite the conditions, some residents took time out to enjoy the snow.

One Damascus student said that she is “very happy because the snow has brought some happiness that hasn’t been seen in Syria for a long time”. She added that the country has “suffered so much”, and “hopes the weather can relieve people’s pain”.

The peaceful and snowy conditions are in stark contrast to the ongoing fighting in the country, with two children reportedly killed in the past number of days in Homs.

The winter storm has also coincided with a major electricity outage across Syria, adding to the suffering of thousands of residents struggling to heat their homes.

Refugees living in camps are bearing the brunt of the freezing temperatures.

The winter storm is expected to ease on S
