Eiffel Tower lights up for Mandela

France pays tribute to Nelson Mandela by lighting up the iconic Eiffel Tower with his name and the colours of the South African flag.

Standing at 324 metres (1,063 feet) tall, the Eiffel Tower is one of world's the most visited monuments.

A ceremony will take place at the "square for human rights" at the Trocadero, opposite the Eiffel Tower on Sunday (December 15), the day of Mandela's funeral, in which Parisians are invited to light candles to pay respect to the Nobel peace laureate.

Mandela will be buried on Sunday in Qunu, his ancestral home in the rural Eastern Cape province, 700 km (450 miles) south of Johannesburg.
