North Korea says the uncle of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been executed - after a special military tribunal found him guilty of treason.

Jang Song Thaek was once considered the second most powerful man in the highly secretive state.

On Thursday, North Korea's official news agency announced quote: "The accused Jang brought together undesirable forces and formed a faction as the boss of a modern day factional group for a long time and thus committed such hideous crimes as attempting to overthrow the state."

Earlier this week, Jang was stripped of all his posts - and accused of criminal acts including mismanagement of the country's finances, womanizing and alcohol abuse.
