Metallica performs in Antarctica

American heavy metal band Metallica rocked aficionados with its vibrant music during a concert in Antarctica on Sunday (December 08), becoming the first ever music group to perform live on all seven continents.

The 120-strong crowd was seen singing, cheering, hand banging as the artists James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujillo played some of their best iconic numbers on stage.

The group performed inside a protective dome to a mix of scientists and fans who had won a contest to hear the legendary band play. To preserve the continent's landscape and prevent avalanches, the metal band skipped traditional amplifiers and instead blasted their greatest hits to an audience that head banged to the music from headphones.

Metallica was formed in 1981 and released its first album, "Kill 'Em All" in late 1983, post which the band's popularity soared both in the U.S. and Europe, making them a sensation in the world of music.
