Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki met with Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran.

Maliki's meeting is part of his two-day visit to the country during which he is expected to discuss bilateral relations between his country and Iran.

Maliki also met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to discuss similar issues.

The prime minister, who faced sharp U.S. criticism in March for letting Iran fly weapons and fighters over Iraq to help president Bashar al-Assad in Syria, may seek to turn his pivotal position in the region to advantage as the fallout from the Arab uprisings of 2011 and Iran's nuclear programme shakes up U.S. strategy.
