Protesters in Indonesia staged a rally in front of the Australian embassy in Jakarta on Tuesday (November 27), after documents leaked by former U.S. National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden allegedly revealed that Australia's intelligence services had bugged the phones of senior Indonesian officials.

Last week, Indonesia downgraded diplomatic ties with staunch U.S. ally Australia following media reports that Canberra spied on President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his wife.

About 100 angry flag-waving protesters burned pictures of the Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, accusing Australia of betraying Indonesia.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott wrote to Yudhoyono at the weekend over the spying row but neither side has made public details of the letter.
