A rescuer from the Russian Emergencies Ministry, Nikolai Rybachenko, took the Olympic torch to the bottom of the world's deepest lake, Lake Baikal, on Saturday.

The mission was the result of two months of training dives.

The Olympic torch is on an unprecedented 65,000-kilometer, 123-day journey, criss-crossing Russia to show the world Russia's regional and ethnic diversity while creating excitement and unity among residents ahead of the Games, according to the organizers.

Lake Baikal is in Russia's eastern Siberia region, a 5-hour flight from Moscow.
