Google ad warms hearts across India and Pakistan
It’s the story of two childhood friends separated in 1947 during the partition of the British Indian Empire which led to the creation of India and Pakistan as independent states. More than 65 years later, one of the friends, who is now living in New Delhi tells his granddaughter their story. She decides to reunite them, and takes to the web to track down her grandfather’s old friend who stayed in Lahore. Produced by Google to promote its search engine, the story has touched the hearts of web users, both sides of the border.
The video has been viewed over 4 million times since it was posted online last week. Indian and Pakistani web users have taken to social networks in their droves sharing sad and painful memories of the partition which saw hundreds of thousands of families separated and the outbreak of violent inter-state clashes.
Many web users hope to see an improvement in relations between the two countries. India and Pakistan have gone to war three times since their independence, and continue to tear themselves apart over the territorial dispute in Kashmir.
The overwhelming response to the video has also given fresh impetus to the “Milne Do” campaign: an online petition urging the governments of India and Pakistan to loosen visa restrictions between the two countries and promote friendship and peace between their people.
