ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)

NASA's new Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission, or MAVEN, launched into space at 1:28 p.m. EST Monday from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

It's headed to Mars on a mission looking for clues about the evolution of the Red Planet by examining its atmosphere.

It will be a long journey. When the explorer arrives in September 2014, MAVEN will put itself into orbit around Mars and begin scrutinizing the thin layer of gases that remains in its skies.
