Typhoon Haiyan: a 'wake up call' at UN climate talks
The plight of the Philippines is ever-present as an international climate change conference continues in Poland.
On the sidelines of the event, a protest was held in solidarity with Naderev Sano, the Philippines delegate who is fasting to demand a deal to combat global warming which he blames for the devastation of his homeland.
Aid for developing countries having to deal with climate change is being discussed at the conference.
“There can be no greater wake-up call at these talks then the need to address a mechanism for loss and damage,” said Kelly Dent, the climate spokesperson for Oxfam. “We need facility here that will address the utter devastation and loss that the people of the Philippines are experiencing and feeling now.”
Poor nations have suffered most from extreme weather in the past two decades, according to a report issued at the talks in Warsaw.
To combat that trend, delegates from nearly 200 countries are preparing for a UN pact on global warming, due to be sealed in 2015.
