Voters head to the polls on Election Day - where the focus of the off-year elections - points to races in New York, New Jersey and Virginia.

After months of tough campaigning, Virginians cast their ballots in the race for governor.

Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe - a businessman and major party fundraiser - has led the polls ahead of Republican Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli - the Tea Party favorite.

The contest in Virginia has become a closely watched battleground ahead of the mid-term congressional elections next year - and the presidential election in 2016.
