Eight police officers were killed in an ambush staged by communist rebels in Allacapan, Cagayan province of Philippines on Monday. The officers are members of the elite police Special Action Force. They were en route to a hospital for a regular medical test when a landmine exploded under their vehicle. A group of 30 rebels of the New People's Army who were hiding in the bush along the road then sprayed the vehicle with bullets. The officers returned fire but were overpowered by the rebels. The group then fled with firearms from the slain officers. It was reported that seven officers died at the scene. The seven wounded managed to escape on foot and were rescued by government troops in the Ballesteros Municipal Hospital in Cagayan province. The eighth officer died later at the hospital.
