Bush rolls down gorge in Northern India, at least 18 killed

A bus plummeted down a 500-foot gorge in an isolated rural district in northern India, killing at least 18 people. There were at least 36 people on board the bus that was travelling in Sirmaur district in the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh when the driver lost control of the vehicle. Rescue operations continued throughout the day. Fourteen injured were extracted from the wreckage and sent to the nearest hospitals, some more than three hours away.

India has the deadliest roads in the world with the annual death toll surpassing 100,000. A combination of vehicle overcrowding, poor vehicle safety standards and unkempt roads coupled with low training standards for drivers create and havoc-riddled environment for drivers.
