The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested Kudligi MLA (Independent) B Nagendra and police officer Ramakanth Hullur in connection with the Belekeri port scam. The MLA was arrested after questioning at the CBI office on Bellary Road.

Sources said Nagendra was issued a notice and presented himself before the Investigating Officer for questioning, after which he was arrested. He may be produced before the judge at his residence on Friday since it is a holiday.

Hullur, who was an inspector in Sandur, was earlier arrested in connection with the Deccan Mining Syndicate case but was out on bail.

The first chargesheet in the Belekeri case filed before the CBI special court revealed that SB Logistics, which exported 7.74 tonnes of ore from Belekeri, had purchased most of the ore from Nagendra’s Eagle Traders & Logistics.

SB Logistics had paid `151.82 crore to Eagle Traders for this purchase between January 2009 and May 2010. Eagle Traders, in turn, had transferred the amount to its 18 different companies. These companies ultimately issued several self cheques in the names of former minister G Janardhana Reddy’s employees.

The CBI stated that Janardhana Reddy and B Nagendra were in constant touch to arrange for iron ore required by SB Logistics.

The chargesheet said the entire 6.05 MT of iron ore sold to SB Logistics by Eagle Traders were illegally mined by Janardhana Reddy and transported with fake permits. Till 2008, B Nagendra and Kuruba Nagaraj were partners of Eagle Traders and Logistics.

When Nagendra became an MLA in 2008, he gave a GPA to Kuruba Nagaraj to run the business.
