In a new and intriguing twist to the caste-driven politics of the state, a suspicion among a section of Veerashaiva pontiffs that Ahinda mascot and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah would muzzle Lingayat sentiments, saw protests erupt over the traditional Adda Pallakki Utsav, with the chief minister facing the brunt of the sect’s anger late on Tuesday night when protesters converged on his home.

The utsav sees the seer Balehonnur Rambapuri Jagadguru Veerasomeshwara Shivacharya Swamiji carried around in a palanquin, in and around Jewargi from October 5 to 14, as part of an annual ritual.

Controversy erupted when the Gulbarga district administration refused to give permission to the utsav, heeding complaints by followers of the rival Sri Mahanta Shivayogi of Sulaphal Mutt in Gulbarga and Shivananda Mahaswamy of Sri Siddalingeshwara Viraktra Mutt at Sonna in Jewargi taluk, that the Adda Pallakki Utsav’s practise of making the pontiff sit on a high platform on the ground was demeaning and against the Basava philosophy which emphasises equality.

Fearing a breakdown of law and order, the deputy commissioner N.V. Prasad and Superintendent of Police Amit Singh on Tuesday ordered the postponement of both the Adda Pallakki Utsav as well as a religious discourse proposed by the rival factions.

Kedarnath priest, Bhimashankar Shivacharya Swamiji who was in town, however took up cudgels on behalf of the Rambhapuri pontiff, and staged a dharna outside the CM's residence.

Siddaramaiah who at first refused to be drawn into the controversy, was forced to accede after the angry swamiji said "I swear on Kedarnath, this government will go in three months if you do not allow this ritual."

However, soon after the CM agreed to allow Adda Pallakki Utsav to go ahead, seers of other backward class maths also stepped up their demand that the government ban the Adda Pallakki Utsav.

Adda Pallakki Utsav: Under this age old ritual, hosted by the peetha, the Rambhapuri math pontiff is carried in a palanquin by four people while devotees worship him.

Opposition: The idea of carrying a human being in a palanquin is against the principles of Basava philosophy. Veerashaivas who worship Shiva, follow Basaveshwara, the 12th century social reformer and founder of Veerashaiva philosophy.
