STORY: A witness describes the dramatic car chase through the streets of Washington from near the White House to the U.S. Capitol which ended in gunfire on Thursday (October 3) after the driver was shot.

Driving a black sedan, the suspect rammed security barricades near the White House. Then the car, apparently carrying a child, raced up Pennsylvania Avenue toward the Capitol where Congress was in session.

A witness said police stopped the sedan at the base of the Capitol and surrounded the car with their guns drawn.

"They opened the passenger side of the door, were yelling at the driver," said Frank Schwing, a furloughed federal worker who lives four blocks from the scene.

"At that point the driver put the car in reverse and drove out really quickly, slammed into a (police) cruiser, pushing it out of the way, it did a 180 and took off again," said Schwing.

All the shooting appears to have been done by police; law enfo
