Nigeria college students gunned down

Victims of an attack by suspected Islamist militant gunmen on a Nigerian college arrive at hospital.

About 40 students were killed in the attack, some of them shot as they slept.

Witnesses said the gunmen marched some students outside and shot them.

Others were gunned down as they tried to flee the scene at Damaturu in the north-east.

The state governor who visited the victims of Sunday's attack urged security forces to do more to stop the insurgency.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) GOVERNOR OF YOBE STATE, ALHAJI IBRAHIM GAIDAM, SAYING:

"We have seen movements of troops and armour fighting, we are yet to see the action on ground actually, so I want to seize this opportunity to appeal to the military authority and all other securities, the police and all civil defence to ensure that, to live up to the expectation of our people, because we have been seeing many English written on the pages of the newspapers but no action. We want action.
