As Kenya's siege enters its third day, Al Shabab have claimed they acted to protect Somalians and Muslims. This archive report offers a rare insight to the militant group's foreign links and influence in Somalia.

"I ask god to make Al Qaeda victorious over their enemies", a young boy says, clutching gifts from Al Shabab. When plagued by drought and famine, the Somalis say it was Al Shabab who came to their rescue and gave them medicine and food. Al Qaeda's official envoy to Somalia, a man speaking "American-accented English" praises the "strenuous efforts of Al Shabab" in establishing themselves as a legitimate Somali authority.
