Liquid hydrogen, like the kind used to fuel the space shuttle, can be used in a diesel engine, but storing that kind of fuel requires it to be kept at less than 432 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, and if anyone tried to use it, the car’s engine would freeze.
Kerosene fuel called RP-1 will also work in diesel fuel engines.
It was created in the 1950s as an efficient substitute for alcohol based rocket fuels.
RP-1 was used to power the Soyuz and Falcon 9 spacecrafts.
According to Manuel Martinez-Sanchez, an aeronautics and astronautics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology: “It’s a close relative of diesel fuel, so there is no real problem using it in diesel engines. The only special thing about RP-1 is a lower volatility and a higher viscosity, so the engine might not run well on cold days.”
Rocket fuel is reportedly less efficient to use in cars and it wouldn’t help the engine reach higher speeds of acceleration.
