Obama says credible threat of force in Syria must remain an option

STORY: U.S. President Barack Obama touted the possibility for a diplomatic solution in Syria in his weekly address to the American people but added the U.S. will keep up the threat of military action.
"We will maintain our military posture in the region to keep the pressure on the Assad regime," Obama said in his weekly internet address. "And if diplomacy fails, the United States and the international community must remain prepared to act," Obama said.
Obama's comments were prepared before the announcement early Saturday (September 14) that an agreement had been reached in Geneva between the U.S. and Russia for a framework to secure Syria's stockpile of chemical weapons and avert potential U.S. military strikes.
Earlier accounts of the negotiations on Friday (September 13) suggested that both sides had reached a "pivotal point" in talks and were optimistic that a deal could be reached.
