In the study, surveys and tests were administered to heterosexual couples in the Netherlands and in the US.
In one test, the individual participants were asked to compose a passage outlining a time when their partner either succeeded or failed.
Following the writing, they were given a word-association exercise for the purpose of revealing how what they’d reported made them feel.
Turns out, men who wrote about one of their partner’s better times exhibited a battered sense of self-esteem, even though they weren’t personally involved in the scenario.
Other areas of the research process revealed that it didn’t matter if the feat was intellectual or social, the accomplishments of the females sparked self-esteem dips in the males.
The authors of the study said that further exploration into how a female partner’s success influences the male’s overall outlook on a relationship’s future is still needed.
