Chinese web users react to Bo Xilai’s trial
The trial of Bo Xilai, the disgraced former Chinese communist party official, who is facing charges of corruption and abuse of power, began Thursday in Jinan, in eastern China. The court has been providing live updates from the hearing on its dedicated micro blog. An account of the proceedings was posted online in real time, with photographs, to keep journalists and members of the public informed on this highly anticipated trial.

Web users have been scrutinizing the pictures. This photo in particular has caught bloggers’ attention; Bo Xilai’s hand gesture in the photo has sparked speculation about what he could be trying to tell the world, wondering if he was in fact trying to convey a message to his loved ones.

And although the trial is not a censored subject on social networks, the authorities do, it would seem, want to exert some control over the content of discussions. Most of the comments posted to the site are applauding and supporting the new president Xi Jinping, in the fight on corruption, saying this trial and the subsequent ruling could well serve as an example to other political officials in China.
