A report from Navigant Research asserts that by 2035 self-driving cars will account for 75 percent of regular-use car sales worldwide.
When they say self-driving, they don’t just mean the ones with assists like self-braking. They mean the fully self-controlled ones that aren’t even legal for test purposes in most states, like the Google car.
Navigant’s predictions include not only a huge number of autonomous cars on the road, they estimate that annual car sales overall will skyrocket to 130 million.
After the number crunching is done, the result is tens of millions more cars on the roads.
Their estimate takes into consideration the simultaneous growth of wealth and population in China and assumes that up and coming car buyers there will go the autonomous route.
It’s also been suggested that independently driving vehicles will put an end to many urban dwellers car-owning deterrents like lack of parking, as the car will just go find a space itself.
Industry-wide, most feel the self-driving cars will be road ready by 2020.
