It’s a fear of many expectant moms; giving birth outside the safe confines of a hospital.

A mother in Maryland recently gave birth to a baby girl on Interstate 270.

Police and emergency service crews were dispatched to the scene at a little before 6:30 am after calls came in regarding a medical emergency. However when crews arrived, the woman’s car was stopped on the shoulder and she had already delivered the infant.

They were both taken to the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Both mom and baby were said to be doing just fine

A clinical nurse manager at Shady Grove Hospital said the unnamed mother was a midwife patient who wanted to stay home as long as possible during her pregnancy and also hoped to have a natural birth.

One member of the assisting emergency crew stated “This was actually pretty easy compared to working on an accident. The key was to keep the baby clean and warm, and make sure the mom was fine.”

Although it was an all-around joyous event, fellow early morning commuters weren’t happy, as southbound traffic was backed up for about two miles.
