Obama's UN nominee calls world body's inaction on Syria a 'disgrace'

(SOUNDBITE) (English) PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA'S NOMINEE AS U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED NATIONS SAMANTHA POWER, SAYING:

"Representing the United States would be the privilege of a lifetime."

Samantha Power, President Barack Obama's nominee to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations begins her confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The 42-year-old former White House national security staffer and journalist who won a Pulitzer Prize for her study of U.S. failures to prevent genocide, is seen as an advocate of an activist foreign policy.

And while she had high praise for the body she hopes to join -- she also had sharp words.
