On Friday, the Vatican announced the popular Catholic figure would be made a saint after Pope Francis approved a second miracle attributed to the Polish pontiff.

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) VATICAN SPOKESMAN, FATHER FEDERICO LOMBARDI SAYING:

"In this audience, the pontiff authorised the Congregation to proceed with the following decrees: the miracle relating to Pope John Paul II."

The case involved the inexplicable curing of a woman from Costa Rica, who prayed to the deceased pope on the day of his beatification in 2011.

John Paul had already been credited with asking God to cure a French nun suffering from Parkinson's disease.

The performance of two verified miracles is usually required for sainthood.

The Vatican said the late Pope John XXIII, who headed the Catholic church from 1958 to 1963, would also be canonised.
