Egypt's new president takes office

The head of Egypt's Constitutional Court Adli Mansour was sworn in as the country's interim president on Thursday, one day after the army ousted Mohamed Mursi as head of state.

Mansour will replace Mursi as head of state after appearing at Cairo's constitutional court where he is chief justice, the first step in what the military hopes will be a peaceful path to presidential and parliamentary elections.

''I vow to safeguard the republican system and to respect the law and constitution and to look after the interests of the people and to preserve the independence of the homeland and its safety.''

Army intervention was backed by millions of Egyptians, including liberal leaders and religious figures who expect new elections under a revised set of rules.
