Rudd defeats Gillard to become Australia's PM

(SOUNDBITE) (English) AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER, KEVIN RUDD:

"In 2007 the Australian people elected me to be their Prime Minister that is a task I resume today with humility, with honour and with an important sense of energy and purpose"

With these words former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd resumed leadership of the country's ruling Labor party, and took up the position of Prime Minister.

It comes after an internal party election that saw Rudd get 57 votes, ousting Julia Gillard who had garnered 45.

The outgoing Prime Minister spoke shortly after the results were announced.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) FORMER AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER, JULIA GILLARD:

"As you would probably be aware by now, Kevin Rudd has been elected as leader of the federal parliamentary Labor party. I congratulate Mr Rudd on his election. In view of his election I have written to the governor general asking her to commission Rudd as Prime Minster of Australia. "
