Swollen river water swept houses away in northern India, inundated low lying areas causing extensive damage, while the paramilitary forces undertook rescue operations.
A trail of mass destruction in northern India state of Uttarakhand was left behind, with damaged houses hanging in mid air, as mud beneath the houses, was washed away by the furious river water, gushing in from all sides.
Early monsoon rains have swollen the Ganges, India's longest river, which has swept away houses, killed at least 69 people and left tens of thousands stranded in the hills.
Ajay Chadha, director General of India's paramilitary force, Indo-Tibetan border police, said in New Delhi on Wednesday (June 19), that it was becoming very difficult for the security forces to reach stranded people.
