Two Friends Catch Potential Record-Breaking 17.6-Pound Fish

Caleb Newton and his friend Phil Wilcox landed a 17.6-pound Northern Snakehead. The men will find out later this summer if their catch will officially be named the world’s biggest.

There’s no doubt that the sport of fishing is highly competitive. However for two friends in Virginia, it’s a team effort.

A fisherman in Fredericksburg may have just nabbed the world record for the largest Northern Snakehead fish. Caleb Newton spent a recent Saturday morning with his friend Phil Wilcox. They decided to go fishing at a creek in Virginia.

Newton was the one who landed the massive, 17.6-pound fish but he claims it was Wilcox’s asistance that made it possible for him to reel in the giant creature and get it on the boat. Newton stated “Without a doubt, this fish wouldn't have been landed if Phil wasn't there to get it into the net.”

The two buddies grew up together. Initially, the pair didn’t realize that they had caught a possible record-breaking fish, and it almost ended up as someone’s dinner. Luckily, Newton caught on before the fish was sliced and had it weighed.

The current world record belongs to a fish caught in Japan, which weights two ounces less than Newton’s Northern Snakehead.
