U.N. believes chemical weapons used in Syria

The fog of war in Syria.

It's a country in the throws of relentless violence -- documented by amateur video which often can not be independently verified.

Now Paulo Pinheiro who chairs the UN investigation on Syria says they suspect chemical weapons are in play.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) PAULO PINHEIRO, CHAIRMAN OF INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION OF INQUIRY ON THE SYRIAN ARAB REPUBLIC, SAYING:

"There are reasonable grounds to believe that limited quantities of toxic chemicals were used. It has not been possible on the evidence available to determine the precise chemical agents used, the delivery systems, or the perpetrators. Other incidents also remain under investigation."

The allegations lend urgency to a new diplomatic push to end the war.

France has said it suspects the nerve agent sarin has been deployed on several occasions.

The White House says its still investigating the matter. Press Secretary Jay Carney.
