Anti-government protests stretched into the early morning hours in Turkey on Monday.

Demonstrators in Izmir threw petrol bombs at the ruling party's headquarters as part of a country-wide uprising against prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's government.

In the capital Ankara, more of the same. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered and clashed with riot police who later, loaded arrested protesters onto buses.

The clashes started on Friday after the government cut down trees in Istanbul's main square to make way for new buildings. But they quickly turned into anti-government themed gatherings with protesters criticising Erdogan's push to overhaul the constitution and transform the city's ancient skyline.

In the early hours of Monday morning, police used heavy machinery to clear debris from the roads.

This construction excavator had been hijacked by demonstrators who attempted to drive it to the Prime Minsiter's office- payback
