Anchored putting banned by golf's ruling bodies

Golf's rule makers, the US Golf Association and R&A, will ban the controversial practice of anchoring putters in competition effective from January 1st 2016, it was announced this week.

The newly introduced rule 14-1b will see the ban apply to broomhandle and belly putters and any other putter that is rested, or anchored, against a part of the body. Four out of the last six major winners have used anchor putters, including Masters champion Adam Scott.

The US PGA is sitting on the fence for now while several users of long putters say they may take their challenge to the courtroom.
But what are they complaining about? Players still have more than two years to find a more traditional way to overcome their nerves before the ban comes into effect.
