Power cuts and water shortages in blistering India heatwave

Passengers at a railway station in the Indian city of Lucknow try to cool down amid blistering temperatures.

They're among millions affected by the massive power cuts, growing scarcity of water and soaring temperatures currently taking their toll on much of India.

Farmers, like these in Amritsar in Punjab state, have been forced to use expensive generators to work on their farm because of the constant power cuts.

This farmer says he can't irrigate his fields so his rice seedlings are drying out.

The record breaking heatwave, with temperatures around 45 degrees Celsius, has hit much of India even as the country waits for the annual monsoon rains to reach the mainland.

But it hasn't been bad news for everyone - hill stations like this one in Nainital are reaping the dividends as tourists flock to the town to escape the heat.
