00:00Rihanna Marcus and me were in this final break when when the echelon started and yeah that was
00:12a good situation but of course also a little bit hard to control so a little bit stressful but then
00:18when we entered the final kilometer yeah we just tried to stay in the best possible position and
00:25now Mariana Vos goes this is it the green jersey wearer Mariana Vos looks over to her left and
00:31there is no response from behind Mariana Vos powering away to the finish last few meters
00:37to go and she has plenty of time to celebrate. Mariana Vos all smiles at the start this morning
00:46after taking her second stage win yesterday but this eighth and final stage of La Vuelta Femenina
00:52is all about the red jersey. Demi Follering heading into a big day of climbing
00:56with a lead of 52 seconds on Elisa Longo Borghini.
01:05There are two big climbs today the Puerto de la Morquera 9.1 kilometers at 6.8 percent
01:11and Val di Schi 12.8 kilometers at 4.8 percent.
01:15They should provide a fitting finale to what has been a spectacular race.
01:23After an aggressive start a strong group of 13 riders got up the road
01:27including Mariana Vos in the green jersey and our queen of the mountains Caroline Svinkels
01:32but they only led the peloton by around a minute as they approached the first climb
01:36and the road began to rise. Some riders are starting to struggle and the breakaway was
01:42whittled down to nine by the time they hit the Puerto de la Morquera. Vos, Svinkels, Brody Chapman,
01:48Alessia Virgilia, Silke Smulders, Sarah Giganti, Maria Benito, Lily Williams and Magdalene Valliere.
01:56DSM Fermanich taking things up at the front of the peloton on behalf of their leader Juliet Labus
02:01as the gap came down to around 30 seconds. This is Dani Stamm director of Team SDWorks ProTime
02:07just coming alongside Alaina Cecchini there handing out a bottle.
02:11Soon there were only three women left at the front the Australians Chapman and Giganti
02:16and the Dutchwoman Svinkels who was determined to pick up another 12 points at the summit
02:20but the peloton were closing fast the pace proving too much for the Spanish champion Mavi Garcia
02:28and the three leaders were starting to fade when Paulina Royakas attacked from the bunch
02:33the Fenix Deceuninck climber quickly surging past Brody Chapman and into the lead.
02:40Royakas' stint at the front was short-lived though she was soon caught as well with the
02:45familiar figure of Grace Brown hitting the front of the red jersey group for FDJ Suez.
02:50The winner of Liege Bastogne, Liege looking to set up her teammate Evita Muzik
02:54for a maximum haul at the top of the climb. And now we have a move by Evita Muzik of the
03:00FDJ Suez team our winner and that Laguna Negra she has had her teammate Grace Brown paced so
03:05hard on the front and now she is making her move over the top of this first category climb
03:10as we come up the line now she will take maximum points there.
03:14Muzik becoming the virtual queen of the mountains as they swept into the descent
03:18there was a brief scare for Niamh Fisher-Black as she misjudged this corner.
03:22Oh problem here for Niamh Fisher-Black almost crashing on that tight bend there just hitting
03:28the barriers. The former champion of New Zealand losing contact with the front group but getting
03:32plenty of encouragement from the team car. Come on Niamh go to that group come on fight yourself
03:38to death fight yourself to that wheel. Fisher-Black catching up again before
03:42Swinkels went back on the attack she ended up leading them through the intermediate sprint
03:48with Rihanna Marcus and Longo Borghini then picking up potentially vital bonus seconds in
03:52second and third the gap going out to over a minute as they approached Valdeschi.
03:58Swinkels leading the way onto the only haul category climb of this race the stage winner
04:03would take not only 20 queen of the mountains points but also the Estela Dominguez prize
04:09named for the young Spanish rider who was tragically killed last year.
04:13After a brave effort Swinkels was finally caught with around 9k to go.
04:17Brown continuing to do a fantastic job for Muzik with her high tempo thinning out this lead group
04:23and Longo Borghini was looking a little uncomfortable at the back.
04:27There were still around a dozen riders at the front until the red jersey made her move.
04:31But now it is a move from Demi Vollering in the red jersey the overall race leader makes her move
04:37she has no teammates left in this group but now she has made an attack she followed immediately
04:42everybody's very very wise to this move Demi Vollering on the front now.
04:46Vollering flying off into the distance with nobody able to match her the battle for second
04:52place was on though between Rihanna Marcus and Longo Borghini the Italian began the day 22 seconds
04:58ahead but she was on the back foot here Marcus really driving on in the first chase group only
05:04Muzik was able to stay with her in the end Longo Borghini about 25 seconds further back and fighting
05:10for all she was worth but either way nobody was going to stop Demi Vollering claiming her second
05:15grand tour victory another uphill demonstration from the Dutch champion.
05:22Demi Vollering powers away to the finish the finish road ramping up here for the final few
05:28hundred meters and still as she goes zigzagging over the road acknowledging the fans there
05:33and she is delighted she has done it making amends for last year Demi Vollering acknowledging
05:39the crowd big celebration there Demi Vollering has taken La Fuerte a Femenina 2024.
05:45Second at this race in 2023 and with a score to settle Vollering came to Spain as the overwhelming
05:55favorite and despite all the pressure and expectation the 27 year old has definitely
06:00delivered she hadn't taken a win this season before La Fuerte a Femenina but goes home with
06:05two stage victories and two distinctive jerseys she is our queen of the mountains and a fully
06:10deserved race winner. I'm really happy to to win this stage because it's really nice to finish it
06:16off like this I mean we did a really good tour here some podiums and two stage wins so
06:25I think we can be very proud on our shelves. Following winning the stage by 29 seconds from
06:31Muzyk who'd have been right up there if she hadn't lost time in the crosswinds on stage four
06:35Marcus was third and she had just enough of a gap to snatch second place overall from Longo Borghini
06:44Vollering's margin of victory was there for a minute and 49 seconds over Marcus
06:48with Longo Borghini slipping to third the French duo of Labus and Muzyk round out the top five
06:56Vos reigned supreme in the points classification taking two stage wins to finish with a commanding
07:02total of 190 following second win today pushed her up to second place and the race winner was
07:08also the queen of the mountains thanks to her performance today on Valdesqui
07:12she beat Muzyk by just three points
07:17it wasn't perhaps the race that Mavi Garcia was hoping for but she still finished as the
07:21leading Spanish rider in 20th place overall
07:24and SD Works Pro Time finished up as the best team having helped Vollering to conquer Spain
07:31thanks very much for joining us for La Vuelta a Femenina 2024
07:35and we hope to see you again in 2025
